Public Health & Society Senior Honors Program Application Form

The Public Health & Society Senior Honors Program is a two-semester experience designed for motivated students who want to conduct independent, in-depth research on a topic they care about. Through close faculty mentorship, structured coursework, and hands-on research, students design, execute, and present an original thesis that contributes to conversations about health, culture, and society.


Use this form to apply to the Public Health & Society Senior Honors Program. 

Please ensure all sections are completed in full. Incomplete applications may result in a delay in your project’s approval. If you anticipate significant logistical hurdles in Section 3, we recommend discussing these with your prospective adviser prior to submission.

Eligibility Confirmation

You must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • I have (or will have) senior standing during the program
  • I am a Public Health & Society Major or Second Major
  • My cumulative GPA is at least 3.65
  • I have completed (or will complete) PUBHLTHSOC 3100
  • I understand the two-semester commitment
  • I understand I must earn at least a B- in PUBHLTHSOC 4998 to continue

Section 1: Basic Topic Statement

Your statement should be a concise overview of your proposed research or project. Please ensure you address the following three areas:

  • Topic Identification: Clearly define the subject matter or central question of your study.
  • Methods & Approaches: Discuss the specific methodology you plan to employ (e.g., qualitative interviews, quantitative analysis, experimental design, or literary criticism).
  • Sources & Data Sets: List the primary and secondary sources, databases, or specific sets of data you intend to analyze.
Section 2: Faculty Advising

Success in the honors program relies heavily on mentorship. In this section, please:

  • Identify your confirmed Thesis Adviser.
  • If an adviser has not yet been finalized, list possible advisers you have consulted or intend to approach within your department.
Section 3: Research Logistics & Feasibility

We want to ensure your project is realistic and achievable within the program's timeframe. Please provide details on:

  • Location: Where will the work be conducted? (e.g., specific libraries, laboratories, field sites, or archives).
  • Potential Challenges: Identify any obvious or possible difficulties you might face in accessing:
    • Places: (e.g., travel requirements or restricted facilities).
    • People: (e.g., IRB approval for human subjects or difficulty reaching experts).
    • Data: (e.g., paywalled archives or incomplete data sets).
